History & Background

Example of an adult Butterfly Comet
This is the only breed originating
from the United States. Comets are very similar to Common Goldfish except
for their fins, which are long and flowing as opposed to the stiff short fins
of Common Goldfish.
Comets have more ornamental value for Ponds than Common Goldfish, but breed as easily as Common Goldfish do. So they are often bred for food for predatory fish as well. Back to Top
Special Care
Like Common Goldfish, Comets are very hardy and require no special care. They are commonly kept in ponds and can survive any conditions that Common Goldfish can survive. Back to Top
Ideal Characteristics
The body shape is identical to that of the
Common Goldfish for all intents and purposes. The main differences are in
the fin length and shape. Comets do tend towards slightly longer bodies.
All fins should be single except the Pectoral and Pelvic fins. Caudal fin should be pointed, and long (3/4 the length of the body or more) and deeply forked, like an open pair of scissors. All other fins are longer than the Common Goldfish and should be pointed. Fins should be erect, without folding over or overlapping. Back to Top
Known Variants
The Sarsa Comet has the same body shape and
fin type as a standard Comet, but is colored deep red and white, as shown
in this image. Sarsa Comets do not necessarily have Tancho-type pattersn,
just red and white coloration.
Butterfly Comets are normal Comets with flowing fins that dont stay erect. They do not have split Caudal fins like butterfly varieties of other goldfish breeds. Except for their longer fins, they conform to the same standards as normal Comets.Back to Top
